Corrugated packaging for rainy season

Corrugated Packaging Design for Rainy Seasons and High-Humidity Environments

Practical guidelines for selecting flute structure, paper grades, surface coating, and box design to help maintain packaging strength in high-humidity conditions.

How Humidity Affects Packaging

During the rainy season or in areas where relative humidity exceeds 80%, corrugated paper can absorb moisture from the air. This weakens the bonding between paper fibers and reduces the box’s compression strength.

Without proper packaging design, boxes may collapse, deform, or become vulnerable to damage during storage, stacking, and transportation.

Under high-humidity conditions, the strength of corrugated boxes may decrease by approximately 40–50%. Therefore, selecting the right structure and materials is essential for real operating environments.

Selecting the Right Flute Structure and Paper Grade

1. Use a Stronger Flute Structure

For heavy products or high stacking requirements, double-wall structures such as B/C or B/A flute should be considered to improve compression strength.

2. Choose Kraft Liner Paper

KA or KL liner paper made from high-quality pulp offers excellent strength and durability, making it suitable for packaging exposed to humid conditions.

Moisture-Resistant Surface Coating Technologies

Paper surface coating helps improve resistance to moisture and water droplets. The appropriate coating technology should be selected based on product type and transportation conditions.

Coating Type Key Properties Recommended Applications
Paraffin Wax Coating Provides strong resistance to water and moisture. Fresh food packaging, chilled products, or goods exposed to high humidity.
Water-Based Varnish Improves moisture resistance and is more environmentally friendly. General product packaging or items that do not require direct water resistance.
PE Lamination Protects against water droplets and moisture penetration. Frozen food boxes, food packaging, or products used in wet environments.

Adhesive and Bonding System Selection

Glue joints and sealing areas are critical points in humid environments. If the adhesive is not suitable, delamination or bonding failure may occur during use.

Using moisture-resistant adhesive or Water Resistant Additive can help improve structural stability and reduce the risk of box failure during transportation.

Physical Box Design Considerations

  • Align flute direction with the main load-bearing direction.
  • Reduce unnecessary holes or openings to minimize moisture penetration.
  • Select box styles that help protect against rain, water droplets, and external humidity.
  • Consider special box structures for products that require higher protection.

Quality Packaging Helps Protect Brand Value

Moisture protection during the rainy season is not only about preserving the condition of the box. It also protects product quality, reduces damage, and builds customer confidence when products arrive safely and in good condition.
